This past weekend, I was excited to help throw a baby shower for my baby sister! She is due to have her daughter, Persephone, next month. The theme of this shower was dragons. Why dragons? Since she became pregnant, everyone asked her what she was having to which she responded, “a dragon.” Combined with the horrible heartburn she had, which can surely be explained by having a fire-breather growing inside, it’s clear that a dragon theme was perfect for this shower.
The biggest problem that I had was finding dragon themed products. I’m hardly crafty, so I relied upon the wonders of Amazon and Etsy to see my way through it. On short notice, I managed to find balloons, centerpieces, prints, books, cupcake toppers and a plastic blow up dragon.
I’ve been in catering for nearly 15 years, and one of my favorite ways to serve food is through a “station.” Who doesn’t love personalizing their own plates? There are so many different types of stations to choose from, but we did a nacho/taco bar (because Dragons Love Tacos, duh!). This was complete with two types of meat (chicken and beef), nacho cheese sauce, plus all of the necessary toppings for delicious tex-mex. After the nacho station was the fondue station. Chocolate fondue is hard to beat, especially when combined with an assortment of fruits, pretzels, cookies, and chips! Finally, we had a watermelon carved in the shape of a baby carriage, with a mini honeydew melon dragon inside. For dessert, I made oreo pops and two kinds of cupcakes (with downloadable cake toppers from Etsy), set on the coolest display I’ve seen!
The best thing of all? The entire party was gluten-free!
